Playground Buddies

What is it?

Playground Buddies is a project that takes place in lots of schools in Brighton and Hove. It’s where children learn to be a playground buddy in their school, which means they help other children feel safe and have fun in the playground.

Who is it for?

If your school is part of the Playground Buddy project then children from year 5 and/or 6 can apply to become a Playground Buddy.

When does it happen?

Our Participation & Peer Support worker Charlotte, will arrange with your teachers to come to your school and train up Playground Buddies so that they can feel confident in the playground in their new role. It will then be up to your school on how often you take on the position of Playground Buddy.

Nearly all schools have timetables which means that you don’t have to be a Playground Buddy at every playtime!

What do other children say about being a Playground Buddy?

‘Playground Buddies makes the younger children feel welcome.’

‘It makes me think more about others.’

‘It means I get to help people if they are feeling sad or lonely.’
